Raquel Bastos, Viola
Raquel has worked with various orchestras internationally and performed as a chamber musician and recitalist throughout Portugal, United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, South Africa, United States, China and Australia.
After completing with distinction a Bachelor of Music with Honours from Porto University in Portugal, she furthered her studies at the University of North Texas completing a Doctoral GAC where she was awarded the prestigious Outstanding Graduate in Strings Award.
Raquel has worked with violists such as Kim Kashkashian, Bruno Giuranna, Roger Benedict, Jeffrey Irvine, Carol Rodland, Martin Outram, Graham Oppenheimer, Sylvie Altenburger and Wolfram Christ. Raquel appears as lecturer and recitalist at International Viola Conferences and AUSTA Conferences, alongside the most renowned violists of her generation. She has been a guest artist at International Festivals such as the Brisbane, Bangalow and Stradbroke Music Festivals with many notable artists, and frequently performs recitals at the Universities of Aveiro, Queensland and the Sunshine Coast.
After moving to Australia, Raquel has been an active, performing regularly in the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and as principal violist with the Queensland Festival Orchestra. She also appeared as a soloist with the Brisbane Philharmonic and Corda Spiritus orchestras. As a chamber musician, Raquel performs in the QSO Chamber Players Series; Camerata Chamber Orchestra; Collusion Contemporary Ensemble; Southern Cross Soloists, and as a recitalist at the universities of Queensland and University of the Sunshine Coast.
In 2017, she released her first CD Essentia Urbana, an album of Australian compositions for viola and piano, which has been regularly featured on ABC Classic FM Australia wide, and 4MBS.
Raquel is the Head of Strings at Villanova College in Brisbane, Australia, and is increasingly sought after as an adjudicator and conductor at the Griffith University State Honours Ensemble Programs, Fanfare from Education of Queensland, University of Queensland’s Strings’ Competitions and other music festivals in Queensland, Australia.
